Direct proof of use
The clearest documented Project 11356R combat role in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is Russian Black Sea Fleet use of Admiral Essen as a Kalibr strike platform. Truth Hounds and IPHR investigated the March 29, 2022 strike on the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration building, assessed the munition as a Kalibr-family missile launched from the Black Sea, and concluded that the most likely launch platform was the Russian frigate Admiral Essen.
Later Ukrainian reporting also identifies Admiral Essen as a Project 11356R frigate used for Kalibr launches against Ukraine. Ukrainska Pravda reported in March 2026 that Russia had used the ship to launch Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets, and in May 2026 again described the ship as part of Russia's Black Sea Fleet and used in attacks on Ukraine since 2022.

Dated milestones
The class entered the war as part of the Black Sea Fleet. Severnoye Design Bureau says Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen were delivered to that fleet in 2016, with Admiral Makarov delivered to the Russian Navy in December 2017, and identifies Kalibr strike missiles and the Shtil-1 surface-to-air missile system as part of the Project 11356 armament fit.
On April 12, 2022, Naval Today reported a Russian Ministry of Defence claim that Admiral Essen had destroyed a Ukrainian Bayraktar-type unmanned aircraft off the western coast of Crimea. The report attributed the intercept to two missiles fired from the ship's Shtil anti-aircraft missile system.

Operational role
The documented theater role is Russian maritime long-range strike, with a secondary air-defense role supported by Russia's own April 2022 claim. The long-range strike evidence centers on Admiral Essen and Kalibr missiles fired from the Black Sea against Ukrainian territory; the air-defense evidence centers on the reported Shtil-1 engagement near Crimea.
The sources do not support treating every Project 11356R ship as individually linked to every strike. They support class-level inclusion because Admiral Essen is a class member, was in Black Sea Fleet service during the war, and is specifically identified in direct-use reporting. Where the evidence concerns the Mykolaiv strike, the launch-platform finding remains an investigative assessment rather than an official admission.
