Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Oshkosh M-ATV was documented in the Yemen war through coalition vehicle sightings, captured-equipment reporting, and Houthi-released battlefield footage. Arms Trade Watch reported that Oshkosh M-ATVs were frequently sighted with UAE forces and UAE-armed militia in Yemen, while DefenseMirror reported Oshkosh-made M-ATV vehicles in Houthi-released footage from a claimed September 2019 attack on Saudi-led coalition forces near Najran.

FDD's Long War Journal identified a captured American-made Oshkosh M-ATV marked with the Saudi National Guard logo in Houthi footage from the Najran operation. Army Recognition separately reported captured Saudi Army M-ATVs used by Yemen rebel forces, including modified vehicles fitted with a BTR-80A turret or a ZU-23-2 antiaircraft gun.

Timeline

In July 2015, open-source defense reporting said Yemen rebels had captured Oshkosh M-ATVs from Saudi forces. In November 2017, Army Recognition reported captured M-ATVs in Yemen fitted with heavier weapons, indicating that some captured vehicles had been adapted beyond their original protected-mobility role.

The strongest dated battlefield episode is the September 2019 Najran operation. DefenseMirror reported on September 30, 2019 that M-ATVs appeared in Houthi-released footage from the claimed attack on Saudi-led forces, and Long War Journal described a captured Saudi National Guard-marked M-ATV driven by a Houthi official in the same broader media release.

Narrative

The M-ATV's documented role in Yemen was primarily protected ground mobility for coalition and coalition-aligned forces. The available sources place the vehicle with Saudi, UAE, or UAE-supported forces rather than with Yemen's prewar national inventory, and the sightings are concentrated around ground operations, border fighting, and convoy or outpost contexts.

The same evidence also shows captured-equipment use by Houthi-aligned or other rebel forces. Captured M-ATVs appear in reporting as battlefield spoils, propaganda objects, and, in some cases, improvised fighting vehicles after local modification. The sources do not establish a complete inventory, delivery chain, or loss count for M-ATVs in Yemen.
