Direct proof of use
The Matra Magic II missile appears in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War as a French short-range air-to-air missile fielded on Ukrainian Mirage 2000-5 fighters. Ukrainian Air Force footage released in November 2025 showed a French-supplied Mirage 2000 in Ukrainian service, and aviation reporting identified a Magic-family short-range missile on each wing while noting cockpit footage of a target engagement.
A later Ukrainian Air Force video and multiple reports from that video placed the missile in an air-defense role. The Aviationist reported that Ukrainian Mirages were operating from forward airfields with a two-Magic-2 loadout, and Business Insider reported that a Ukrainian technician identified the Magic 2 infrared-guided air-to-air missile as one of the aircraft's main weapons for missions against Russian drones and missiles.

Timeline
Ukraine's Ministry of Defence states that France delivered the first Mirage 2000 aircraft to Ukraine in early 2025 after Ukrainian pilots trained in France. The ministry later described Mirage 2000 aircraft for Ukraine as equipped with Magic-2 missiles and useful for intercepting cruise missiles and drones including Shahed, Geran, and Gerbera types.
On November 17, 2025, The Aviationist reported Ukrainian Air Force footage of a Mirage 2000-5F with six Kh-101-style kill markings and R550 Magic missiles carried on the wings. On November 26, 2025, a Ukrainian Air Force interview video led to reporting that the aircraft was being used primarily for air-defense interceptions, with the pilot claiming a 98 percent interception effectiveness against drones and missiles and a technician describing the Magic 2's performance favorably.

Narrative
In Ukrainian service, the Magic II is documented as an air-launched air-defense weapon rather than an air-to-ground munition. The missile is tied to Mirage 2000-5 operations against Russian aerial attacks, with reporting describing interceptions of drones and cruise missiles and kill markings that Ukrainian crews associated with Kh-101 cruise missiles.
The public record separates documented carriage and crew claims from independently verified results. The Ukrainian Air Force footage and reporting directly support Ukrainian carriage and operational use of Magic 2 missiles in the conflict. Reported kill probabilities and the exact number of cruise-missile shootdowns come from Ukrainian crew statements and visible markings, and The Aviationist noted that independent verification of the overall effectiveness claim was not available.
