Air Mobility Command reported that a C-130 Hercules from the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron dropped supplies to a U.S. Army unit in Afghanistan on August 31, 2006, using the Joint Precision Airdrop System for the first time in a combat zone. The mission used an Alaska Air National Guard crew deployed from the 144th Airlift Squadron, and AMC identified it as the first Air Force employment of JPADS in an operational or combat airlift mission.
The same report described the payload as ammunition and water delivered to ground troops in Afghanistan. Its photo captions identify the system as the Screamer 2K JPADS bundle, dropped from 17,500 feet above sea level, with four bundles arriving at the drop zone.

Timeline
The Afghanistan combat use followed a joint Army-Air Force development effort that AMC said began in 1993. The operational drop came during a 2006 mobile training-team deployment that taught C-130 crews in theater how to use the system.
