Il-76 in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War

Ukraine used an Il-76MD for wartime airlift into Luhansk airport in June 2014, and Russian Il-76 military transports were later damaged or destroyed at Pskov during the full-scale phase of the war.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Il-76 is directly documented in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through Ukraine's June 2014 Luhansk airport airlift. The 7th Rapid Response Corps history records that an Il-76 approaching Luhansk airport on 14 June 2014 was shot down by LNR forces using an Igla MANPADS, killing forty paratroopers and nine crew members.

Aviation Safety Network identifies the aircraft as a Ukrainian Air Force Il-76MD, registration 76777, flying from Melitopol Air Base to Luhansk Airport. Its accident record says the aircraft was hit on approach, destroyed near Luhansk, and was carrying troops from the 25th Airborne Brigade and a BMD-2 airborne infantry fighting vehicle.

Timeline

On 14 June 2014, the Ukrainian Il-76MD loss marked the clearest documented combat-use episode for the type in the opening Donbas phase of the war: a heavy transport aircraft was being used to move airborne troops, equipment, and a BMD-2 into Luhansk airport when it was shot down.

On 30-31 August 2023, during the full-scale phase, AP reported that a drone attack Moscow blamed on Ukraine damaged four Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft at Pskov. VOA, using AP satellite-image analysis, later reported that suspected Ukrainian drone attacks destroyed at least two Il-76 military transport aircraft at the dual military-civilian Pskov airport.

Narrative

The 2014 Luhansk case shows the Il-76 in its core military-transport role rather than as a strike platform. Ukraine used the aircraft to move airborne personnel and equipment by air into a contested airport during the Donbas campaign. The aircraft was lost during the approach phase, before it could complete the landing.

The later Pskov case places Russian Il-76 transports on the conflict record as high-value airlift assets exposed to deep attacks during the full-scale war. AP described the attack as part of a wider drone barrage across Russian regions and said it could not determine whether the drones were launched from Ukraine or inside Russia; VOA's AP-based satellite-image report described visible destruction of at least two Il-76s and movement of other Il-76s around the airfield.
