Direct proof of use
The IAI Heron TP is directly documented in Israeli use during the 2023 Israel-Hamas War through Israel Aerospace Industries reporting on the Iron Swords war. IAI said the Israeli Air Force operated the Heron family through two squadrons for strategic, tactical, and maritime surveillance over land and sea, with Heron TP designated Eitan in Israeli service.
In the same account, IAI said Heron and Heron TP platforms performed round-the-clock surveillance sorties, with individual missions spanning days and operator teams rotating to keep the aircraft over the target area. Associated Press reporting adds a separate transfer-and-use milestone: Germany's Defense Ministry agreed to an Israeli request to use up to two German-leased Heron TP combat drones that were already in Israel for German training.

Timeline
The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other Gaza-based armed groups attacked southern Israel and Israel launched Operation Swords of Iron. IAI's later Heron-family account describes the first Heron UAS response that morning and places Heron-family operations in the opening phase of the war.
On October 12, 2023, AP reported that Germany had approved Israel's request to use up to two of five Heron TP combat drones leased by the German military and already located in Israel for training. IAI's November 2025 account then documented continuing Heron and Heron TP surveillance sorties in the Iron Swords context, describing persistent ISR rather than a named strike incident.

Operational role
The public record supports an Israeli ISR and situational-awareness role for the Heron TP/Eitan in this conflict. IAI describes Heron-family aircraft carrying surveillance and intelligence-gathering payloads, operating by day and night and in poor weather, and helping Israeli command elements rebuild situational awareness with onboard sensors and communications.
The Heron TP's manufacturer profile explains why the type fits that role: it is operational with the Israeli Air Force, uses satellite communications for beyond-line-of-sight missions, carries multiple payload configurations, and has mission endurance above 30 hours. Airbus describes the German Heron TP as a medium-altitude long-endurance system for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition, produced by IAI and customized for the German Air Force.
The sources used here do not identify a specific Heron TP strike, munition release, orbit location, or individual tail number in Gaza. They support Israeli operation of Heron TP/Eitan aircraft for persistent surveillance and intelligence support, plus German approval for Israel to use German-leased Heron TP aircraft already in Israel.
