Direct proof of use
Forpost use in the 2011 Syrian Civil War is documented through open reporting on Russia's deployed UAV force. CAST reported that Russia deployed Orlan-10 and Forpost drones to Syria, including Navy-operated Forpost systems, and that the heavier Forpost aircraft were used mainly to observe and monitor strikes against high-priority targets from medium altitude and distance.
RAND's study of the Russian air campaign in Syria identifies Forpost as a medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV used across ground-centric and air-centric missions, including artillery spotting, reconnaissance fire, target designation and control, penetrating ISR, battle-damage assessment, and reconnaissance-strike.

Dated milestones
Russian UAV operations expanded after Moscow's September 2015 intervention. CAST reported that Russia had 30 UAV complexes with 70 individual drones in Syria by spring 2016, and described additional UAV complexes brought in December 2016 to monitor the government-rebel ceasefire.
On June 21, 2024, TASS quoted Maj. Gen. Yury Popov of the Russian Center for Reconciliation as saying that a Russian-made Forpost-R reconnaissance-and-attack drone destroyed a group of militants near the Faghdad oil refinery in the Syrian desert. The report is useful as an attributed Russian official claim for an armed Forpost-R strike, not as independent battlefield verification.

Operational role
The documented Syrian role of the Forpost family was primarily reconnaissance and targeting support for Russian and allied operations. CAST describes Russian UAVs in Syria as reconnoitering targets for airstrikes, assessing strike results, and acting as airborne artillery spotters, while noting that Forpost's optics and endurance made it more suitable than lighter drones for monitoring priority targets from safer standoff distances.
RAND frames the same pattern as part of Russia's air campaign adaptation: Forpost supported artillery spotting and reconnaissance-fire tasks, but also helped with target designation, penetrating ISR, battle-damage assessment, and reconnaissance-strike activity. That evidence supports a Syrian Civil War role package of surveillance, targeting support, fire-support coordination, and limited armed-strike reporting for the later Forpost-R.
