Documented Use

Direct proof of use

DITA's documented role in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is Ukrainian 155 mm mobile fire support. The Netherlands Ministry of Defence said in February 2024 that it had ordered nine DITA howitzers in Czechia for Ukraine, and in October 2024 said those nine systems had been handed over to Ukraine during the summer while six more were being ordered.

Ukrainska Pravda reported on 17 November 2024 that the commander of the National Guard of Ukraine had shown the first delivered DITA self-propelled artillery systems with NGU artillery units. Later Defense Express reporting placed DITA systems in service with several Ukrainian National Guard formations and the State Border Guard Service, while treating the total Ukrainian fleet size as uncertain beyond publicly announced orders.

Timeline

The public trail begins with procurement rather than an immediately documented battlefield firing. Dutch officials announced the first order on 27 February 2024; on 17 October 2024 the Netherlands announced six more DITA howitzers and stated that the first nine had already been transferred to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian public appearance followed in November 2024, when DITA systems were reported with National Guard artillery units. State Border Guard reporting in January 2025 described training on a Czech-provided DITA system before front-line use, and later Defense Express reporting described a second DITA in State Border Guard service by December 2025.

Battlefield role

The system was supplied to Ukraine as NATO-standard 155 mm artillery, not as a legacy Soviet-caliber replacement. Excalibur Army describes DITA as a Tatra 8x8 self-propelled gun-howitzer with a 155 mm gun, automatic gun laying, automatic loading, a two-person normal crew, 40 carried rounds, and a listed firing range of up to 39 km.

In Ukrainian service, those characteristics fit the war's demand for mobile artillery that can fire and relocate quickly under drone and counter-battery threat. The direct public evidence supports Ukrainian use by National Guard and State Border Guard formations; it does not establish an exact total delivered fleet or every unit operating the type.
