Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The CZ BREN 2 is documented in Ukrainian service during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through official Ukrainian Defense Industry and Colt CZ statements, which tie the 2024 license-transfer project to prior battlefield deployment by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Military-linked International Legion reporting also places the rifle with foreign volunteers serving under the Ukrainian Land Forces. One Legion item shows a legionnaire firing a CZ BREN 2, while another describes Colombian volunteers using BREN 2 rifles during assault and building-clearing training for battlefield tasks.

Timeline

Public documentation is clearest from 2024 onward. On 23 February 2024, Ukrainian Defense Industry and Ceska zbrojovka announced an agreement of intent for licensed assembly of CZ BREN 2 rifles in Ukraine. Both Ukrainian Defense Industry and Colt CZ described the project as following the rifle's successful battlefield deployment by Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On 16 July 2024, Colt CZ reported that Ceska zbrojovka had signed a technology-transfer contract to produce CZ BREN 2 rifles in Ukraine. By May 2025, Ukraine's Ministry of Defence said licensed serial production of Western-model small arms had begun and named the Czech CZ BREN 2 assault rifle.

Narrative

In the Ukrainian theater, the BREN 2 appears as a modern assault rifle used by Ukrainian forces and International Legion personnel rather than as a distinct platform with public strike records. The available sources support front-line small-arms use, training use for close-quarters and urban assault tasks, and a later industrial effort to assemble the rifle locally for Ukraine's Defence Forces.

The licensed-assembly path became part of the conflict's broader external-support and defense-industrial story. Colt CZ reported the February 2024 assembly agreement and the July 2024 technology-transfer contract; Ukrainian and secondary reporting later described assembly under the Sich name and Ukrainian production lines intended to supply modern rifles to military units.

Reporting from Defense Express and United24 described the BREN 2 as gaining a strong position among firearms used by Ukrainian Defense Forces. Defense Express also identified a fighter from Ukraine's 101st Brigade armed with a CZ BREN 2 near Vovchansk in summer 2024, providing a specific fielding example within the war.
