Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Bushmaster PMV is directly documented in Ukrainian service during the full-scale phase of the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War. Australia announced the first 20 donated vehicles on 8 April 2022, including two ambulance variants, after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request to the Australian Parliament. Australian Defence later reported that Bushmasters and M777 howitzers departed RAAF Base Amberley for Europe on 5 May 2022 as part of the aid airlift.

Australian government statements in October 2022 and July 2023 said the Bushmasters had been used extensively by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. ABC News reporting from eastern Ukraine in June 2023 identified 80th Air Assault Brigade troops training with Bushmasters and described their use for assault operations, movement to the front edge of the front, and evacuation. Oryx separately lists visually confirmed Ukrainian Bushmaster PMV losses in the invasion-of-Ukraine equipment-loss record.

Timeline

The first public transfer step came on 8 April 2022, when Australia committed 20 Bushmaster PMVs to Ukraine, including two ambulance variants and vehicles fitted with radios, GPS, and additional bolt-on armour. On 5 May 2022, an Australian Defence news story reported an Antonov AN-124 airlift from RAAF Base Amberley carrying Bushmasters and M777 howitzers toward Europe.

Australia announced further Bushmaster commitments during 2022 and 2023. By 27 October 2022, the announced total had reached 90 vehicles, and Australian officials said the vehicles had already been used extensively by Ukrainian forces. On 12 July 2023, Australia announced another 30 Bushmasters, taking the committed total to 120. In August 2024, ABC News Verify reported evidence of an Australian-supplied Bushmaster destroyed in the Kursk region during a Ukrainian cross-border operation.

Battlefield role

In Ukraine, the Bushmaster appears primarily as a protected mobility and force-protection vehicle rather than as a tank or infantry fighting vehicle. Australia's April 2022 release described the vehicle's intended role as moving soldiers safely to a battle area before dismounting, and said the donated package included ambulance variants. ABC's June 2023 reporting from eastern Ukraine described front-line troops using Bushmasters to ferry personnel, support assault operations, move soldiers to the forward edge, and evacuate casualties or personnel.

The sources support Ukrainian operation, Australian transfer, front-line protected transport, evacuation, and visually confirmed losses. They do not support treating the Bushmaster as a primary direct-fire combat vehicle in Ukrainian service, although some vehicles were fitted with protected weapon systems and Ukrainian troops described using the top turret during training and combat preparation.
