Direct proof of use
The BTR-4 is directly documented in Ukrainian service during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War by official Ukrainian military reporting, battlefield-video reporting, and later frontline accounts. ArmyInform says the National Guard of Ukraine received BTR-4E Bucephalus vehicles at the beginning of the war and used them in the summer 2014 battles for Sloviansk, where the vehicles provided fire support for checkpoint defenders.
The same ArmyInform account describes BTR-4E use during the full-scale invasion, including a 24 February 2022 clash on the Kharkiv Ring Road, a 25 February 2022 engagement near Staryi Saltiv, the 27 February 2022 battle for School No. 134 in Kharkiv, Mariupol fighting in March 2022, Zaporizhzhia-region fighting in spring 2023, Selydove-area defense in autumn 2024, and a Pokrovsk-axis episode in autumn 2025.

Timeline
The public record places BTR-4E combat use in both major phases of the war. ArmyInform identifies summer 2014 fighting near Sloviansk as an early National Guard use case, then describes a January 2015 urban engagement at Vuhlehirsk in which a National Guard BTR-4E named "Bandershtadt" took part in clearing the city.
During the first days of the full-scale invasion, ArmyInform reports that BTR-4E crews fought Russian forward elements near Kharkiv on 24 February 2022 and that BTR-4 vehicles of the 92nd Brigade were involved in fighting on the Staryi Saltiv-Kharkiv axis on 25 February. Business Insider separately reported on 14 March 2022 that video circulating from the Mariupol area appeared to show a Ukrainian BTR-4 damaging a Russian T-72B3M tank and destroying a BRM-1K armored vehicle, while noting that it could not independently confirm the time and location of the video.

Battlefield role
In Ukrainian use, the BTR-4 appears as a protected troop carrier and wheeled infantry fighting vehicle that can give infantry direct fire support. Ukraine's Ministry of Defence describes the vehicle as an 8x8 armored personnel carrier in service with the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine and says the 20th Operational Brigade "Lubart" operates BTR-4E vehicles with the BM-7 Parus weapon station and additional counter-drone protection.
The MoD overview describes a rear troop compartment for seven personnel, protected rear dismounting, a 30 mm ZTM-1 automatic cannon, a 30 mm KBA-17 grenade launcher, a 7.62 mm machine gun, and anti-tank guided missile capability. Those features match the battlefield roles described in conflict reporting: moving troops under armor, covering infantry, engaging light armor and personnel, and supporting defensive or assault actions at close range.
Defense Express reported in April 2025 that servicemen of Ukraine's 56th Separate Motorized Infantry Mariupol Brigade described using the BTR-4 to support infantry needing cover on the frontline. The article, based on Army TV material, quotes crew discussion of nighttime thermal-imaging use, heavy ammunition expenditure during intensive operations, and battle damage sustained on missions.
