Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The BMP-1AM Basurmanin is documented in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through Russian deployment reporting, battlefield loss imagery, and Ukrainian capture reporting. Defense Express reported on April 26, 2022 that Russian occupation forces had received BMP-1AM Basurmanin vehicles in the temporarily occupied Kupyansk area, and Army Recognition reported on May 9, 2022 that Russian armed forces had deployed the BMP-1AM in Ukraine.

The clearest dated battlefield loss report followed the Luhansk-region river-crossing fighting in May 2022. Defense Express reported that Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian BMP-1AM Basurmanin during an attack on a crossing in Luhansk region; Army Recognition separately described destroyed BMP-1AM imagery near Luhansk region while discussing the type's deployment in Ukraine.

Ukraine also documented a captured example. The Ukrainian Air Assault Forces reported on December 9, 2022 that soldiers of the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade had captured a Russian BMP-1AM Basurmanin, were testing it, and expected to use it against Russian forces.

Timeline

Public reporting places the BMP-1AM in the full-scale phase rather than the 2014-2022 Donbas-only phase. The first relevant sequence runs from reported Russian receipt of BMP-1AM vehicles before and just after the February 2022 invasion, to sightings around occupied Kupyansk in April 2022, to loss reporting in Luhansk region in May 2022.

The later record expands from isolated deployment and destruction reports into visually confirmed loss tracking. Oryx lists BMP-1AM 675-sb3KDZ vehicles among Russian infantry fighting vehicle losses in the invasion, with photo or video evidence required for inclusion, while the December 2022 Ukrainian Air Assault Forces report shows at least one captured BMP-1AM entering Ukrainian hands.

Operational role

In Russian service, the documented role was a modernized infantry fighting vehicle committed to ground operations in Ukraine. The combat use evidence does not establish a reliable total deployed or a complete unit list; it does show the vehicle present with Russian forces, lost in combat, and later tracked among visually documented Russian equipment losses.

In Ukrainian hands, the record is limited to captured-equipment use. The Ukrainian Air Assault Forces attributed the captured BMP-1AM to the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade and said the vehicle was being run in and tested before use against Russian forces. That source supports capture and intended battlefield use, but it does not establish a broader Ukrainian fleet of BMP-1AM vehicles.
