Direct proof of use
ARTHUR appeared in Ukrainian service during the full-scale phase of the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War as a counter-battery and artillery-reconnaissance radar. ArmyInform reported on October 12, 2022 that Ukrainian troops from a separate artillery-reconnaissance brigade had demonstrated the operation of a British MAMBA/ARTHUR radar, and described its work on the front line against Russian artillery.
The Ukrainian report connected the radar to counter-battery work: detecting and tracking field-artillery fire and multiple-launch rocket launches, calculating points of origin and impact, warning friendly troops, and passing data for counter-battery fire. Its article and associated imagery identify the system as MAMBA/ARTHUR, the British designation and Saab ARTHUR family name.

Transfer and fielding timeline
Public evidence distinguishes documented Ukrainian operation from later confirmed donor deliveries. The October 2022 ArmyInform article is the clearest open source for Ukrainian troops operating a British MAMBA/ARTHUR radar at the front. On May 18, 2023, Norway's defence minister said Norway was providing three Arthur artillery-location radars to Ukraine in close collaboration with the United Kingdom.
Sweden added a separate procurement lane in March 2025. The Swedish government authorized FMV to procure five Arthur counter-battery radar systems from Saab for Ukraine, stated that the systems detect artillery projectiles and calculate points of origin, and said deliveries were due to start in 2025. The same release also stated that Arthur had previously been donated to Ukraine by Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Operational role
In Ukrainian service, ARTHUR's documented role was sensing rather than firing. Saab describes Arthur as a mobile weapon locating system deployed close to friendly troops, able to rapidly detect and track artillery projectiles, calculate firing points for counter-battery action, and generate impact-point data for intelligence users. That manufacturer role description matches the functions ArmyInform attributed to the MAMBA/ARTHUR system in Ukrainian artillery-reconnaissance use.
The system therefore sits in the conflict record as a foreign-supplied target-acquisition and force-protection asset for Ukraine's artillery war. Open sources used here support operation, donation, and procurement, but they do not provide a complete inventory of every ARTHUR radar in Ukrainian service or a battle-by-battle record of individual radar missions.
