Documented Use

Direct proof of use

France publicly tied the AMX-10RC transfer to Ukraine's war effort in January 2023, when the French and Ukrainian defense ministers set a two-month delivery target and arranged training for Ukrainian crews. On 15 March 2023, French defense minister Sebastien Lecornu told lawmakers that the vehicles had arrived in Ukraine and that some had already gone to a front line.

Ukrainian unit reporting and defense media then connected the vehicles to the 37th Marine Brigade. Defense Express reported in April 2023 that the brigade had received AMX-10 RC armored vehicles as part of French assistance, and Kyiv Post later cited a 37th Marine Brigade battalion commander describing combat use and losses during Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive.

Timeline

The public record shows a rapid sequence from pledge to fielding. France announced the transfer in early January 2023, crew training followed in France, and by mid-March Lecornu said vehicles were already in Ukraine with some at the front.

By late April 2023, Ukrainian marine imagery and reporting placed AMX-10 RC vehicles with the 37th Marine Brigade. During the summer counteroffensive, Kyiv Post reported a 37th Marine Brigade commander's account that the vehicles had taken part in fighting around Blahodatne and that their light armor made them unsuitable for frontal attack roles. Later reporting from Forbes, Business Insider, and United24 Media described Ukrainian marines using the AMX-10RC/RCR as mobile fire-support or indirect-fire platforms.

Narrative

In Ukrainian service, the AMX-10RC entered the war as a French-supplied wheeled reconnaissance and fire-support vehicle rather than a main battle tank. Its 105 mm gun and optics gave Ukrainian crews a direct-fire weapon with road mobility, but Ukrainian and battlefield reporting repeatedly distinguished that role from heavy armored assault.

The 37th Marine Brigade became the most clearly documented Ukrainian operator in open sources. Defense Express reported that the brigade had received the vehicles, Kyiv Post reported a battalion commander's account of their use around Blahodatne, and United24 Media later photographed AMX-10 vehicles with Ukrainian marines near Pokrovsk and described the unit adapting them after losses in the 2023 counteroffensive.

The vehicle's role shifted as crews adapted to the conflict's artillery, drones, mines, and anti-armor threat. Kyiv Post quoted the 37th Marine Brigade commander praising the guns and observation devices while saying the armor was too thin for frontal attacks. Later reports described Ukrainian marines using AMX-10RC vehicles as mobile fire-support platforms, including standoff fire and fire-support tasks near Pokrovsk.
