Direct proof of use
Oryx provides the direct Syrian Civil War evidence for this W85 record. Its article on YPG Sturmpanzers identifies the YPG as the operator of improvised armored infantry-support platforms in northern Syria and describes the YPG as the primary faction in the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance.
In the same inventory, Oryx describes the final Sturmpanzer design as carrying a BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle turret plus a ball-mounted frontal 12.7 mm W85 heavy machine gun. The source treats the vehicle as a fire-support platform and places the design within the YPG/SDF fight against Islamic State and Free Syrian Army forces in northern Syria.

Timeline
The clearest dated source-backed event is the 7 June 2021 Oryx publication, which cataloged the YPG/SDF Sturmpanzer types after years of conflict-period use and imagery. Oryx also notes that Islamic State captured one YPG Sturmpanzer near Tel Tamir in 2015, but that captured example is separate from the W85-armed final design.
Because the public source package does not give a first appearance date for the W85-armed vehicle, this usage record treats the W85 claim as documented by the 2021 inventory rather than assigning an earlier first-use date.

Battlefield role
The supported role is improvised armored-vehicle fire support by the YPG/SDF side of the conflict. Oryx describes the broader Sturmpanzer family as uparmored infantry-support platforms built to compensate for the YPG's limited access to conventional armored fighting vehicles.
For the W85-equipped final design, the machine gun was one part of a heavier armament package that also included a BMP-1 turret. Oryx assesses the vehicle as better armored and more heavily armed than earlier Sturmpanzer designs, with enough firepower and mobility to have some value as a fire-support vehicle.
The available evidence supports fielding of a W85 on a YPG/SDF improvised armored vehicle in Syria. It does not establish a confirmed firing incident, the number of W85-equipped Sturmpanzers built, a transfer route for the gun, or a complete combat-loss record for the W85-armed design.
