The UMPB D-30SN entered the public battlefield record in Ukraine in March 2024, when photos of remnants from a previously unknown Russian munition appeared and were identified as the UMPB D-30SN. FDD's Long War Journal reported that those images, together with later Russian and Ukrainian imagery, showed a purpose-built Russian glide bomb that was seeing growing use in Ukraine.

Defense Express tied Su-34 release imagery to UMPB D-30SN attacks toward Kharkiv, identifying four bombs released from an aircraft over Russia's Belgorod region and estimating a roughly 90 km flight path if the attack was directed at Kharkiv. A later Defense Express report, based on Ukrainian Defense Intelligence material, said Russian forces had begun using the D-30SN in March 2024 and continued using it against Ukrainian cities.

Timeline

The first public evidence appeared in early March 2024 through remnants photographed in Ukraine. By late March and May 2024, Kharkiv authorities and open-source imagery had linked additional D-30SN remnants and Su-34 release images to attacks on Kharkiv.

On May 25, 2024, Defense Express analyzed release imagery and mapped a Belgorod-area launch point, treating the attack as a Kharkiv-directed strike and using it to estimate a recorded autonomous range of about 90 km. On June 5, 2024, Long War Journal synthesized the available imagery and noted that Russian aircraft had been seen releasing three or four D-30SNs at a time.

On October 5, 2024, a Russian S-70 Okhotnik unmanned combat aircraft crashed near Kostiantynivka in Donetsk Oblast after being shot down by a Russian fighter. The War Zone reported that wreckage imagery showed the nose cone from at least one UMPB D-30SN, indicating the drone was carrying the munition during an operational trial or combat-related flight over Ukraine.

In Ukraine, the UMPB D-30SN has been documented as a Russian stand-off guided glide bomb rather than as a transferred or captured weapon. The cited reporting places the user on the Russian side and identifies Su-34 fighter-bombers as the clearest public launch platform. Ukrainian intelligence material and secondary reporting also list other possible carriers, but the open-source operational record is strongest for Su-34 employment and for D-30SN remnants recovered after strikes.

The munition's conflict role is long-range strike. Long War Journal describes it as a purpose-built glide bomb developed after Russia's earlier UMPK kits, with inertial and satellite guidance and a Kometa controlled-reception antenna reported from early wreckage. Defense Express later reported Ukrainian Defense Intelligence parameters of up to about 100 km range when released from 12 to 15 km altitude and described a factory-built 250 kg-class aerial munition.

The Kharkiv evidence shows how the D-30SN was used operationally: Russian aircraft could release the munition from Russian airspace or from stand-off distance, leaving the bomb to glide toward Ukrainian urban targets.
