Original Fit And Later Service

The Type 053H2G class entered Chinese naval service as a compact multi-role frigate with HQ-61B local air-defense missiles and anti-ship missiles. Later reporting describes the class leaving front-line PLAN frigate service, with former hulls converted for China Coast Guard patrol work or transferred to Sri Lanka.

PLAN fit

The original combat fit included a 1x6 HQ-61B launcher and YJ-83 / C-802-family anti-ship missile launchers.

Conversion pattern

The Diplomat reported in 2015 that Type 053H2G hulls were being converted into China Coast Guard cutters with much of the frigate armament removed.

Exported hull

Naval News reported that the former PLAN Tongling, a Jiangwei I / Type 053H2G frigate, arrived for Sri Lankan service in 2019.

Its compact TELAR layout made it exportable and self-contained compared with earlier Soviet coastal batteries; in the 2014 Yemen Civil War, Houthi forces acquired Rubezh/P-15 stocks from Yemeni military inventories and continued to display the type as part of their anti-shipping arsenal.
