Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Starstreak appears in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through both transfer records and battlefield-use reporting. A UK House of Commons Library timeline records the March 2022 decision to include the Starstreak air-defence system in a larger missile package for Ukraine, and an April 2022 package that added more Starstreak missiles.

The clearest public incident report came on 1 April 2022, when The Independent, citing The Times and defence sources, reported that a video from the Luhansk region showed Starstreak being fired over Ukraine and that Ukrainian forces had been using the system for almost a week. The report attributed the weapon identification to a Ministry of Defence source and defence-industry review of the footage rather than to a separately released official strike assessment.

Transfer and fielding

The transfer began as a defensive air-defense measure after Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion. On 9 March 2022, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told Parliament that the UK was exploring donation of Starstreak high-velocity man-portable anti-air missiles so Ukrainian forces could better defend their skies. The later House of Commons Library timeline records that Starstreak was included in the 24 March 2022 defensive-missile package and that more Starstreak missiles followed in early April.

By October 2022, the UK Ministry of Defence described a broader air-defense contribution to Ukraine that included Stormer vehicles fitted with Starstreak launchers and hundreds of anti-air missiles. The 2023 Defence Command Paper later specified six Stormer vehicles with Starstreak launchers, thousands of surface-to-air missiles including Starstreak, and Dstl assistance integrating UK-gifted Starstreak short-range air-defense systems onto Ukrainian armored fighting vehicles.

Operational role

In Ukrainian service, Starstreak filled a short-range air-defense role against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aircraft, and related air threats. British Army material describes the missile as a high-velocity beam-riding weapon that can be shoulder-fired, used from a lightweight multiple launcher, or mounted on the Stormer armored vehicle, matching the portable and vehicle-mounted routes reflected in UK Ukraine-support records.

A 2023 UK Defence Procurement Minister speech described Starstreak and Martlet missiles as having proved useful in Ukraine against fixed-wing aircraft, support and attack helicopters, uncrewed air systems, and cruise missiles. The public incident record remains thinner than the official transfer record: the Luhansk helicopter engagement is attributed through reporting on video analysis and defence-source identification, while UK official sources more clearly document supply, launcher platforms, and the general Ukrainian air-defense role.
