Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The strongest model-specific public evidence is the UN Panel of Experts' 2020 report on the Yemen conflict. The Panel reported that Houthi forces used an extended-range UAV-X with an additional fuel tank in the August 17, 2019 strike on the Shaybah oil field in Saudi Arabia, inspected debris from one vehicle used in that attack, and found that it appeared similar to the Samad-3 displayed by Houthi-affiliated media in July 2019.

CSIS separately describes the Samad-3 as the extended-range Samad variant and says the Houthis purportedly used it in the July 2018 Abu Dhabi International Airport attack and reportedly used it in an attempt to target Riyadh, where it crashed short of the city. Janes later assessed Houthi-released video as seemingly confirming an Abu Dhabi airport attack and reported that Ansar Allah said the strike used a Samad-3 UAV.

Timeline

The Samad-3 entered public Yemen-war reporting in mid-2018, when Houthi sources claimed a Sammad-3 attack on Abu Dhabi International Airport. That initial claim was disputed: Al Jazeera reported the Houthi claim and the UAE denial, while Bellingcat found no open-source proof of damage or a confirmed airport strike at the time.

The record strengthened in 2019. The Houthis displayed the Samad family in Sana'a in July 2019, then claimed a 10-UAV attack on the Shaybah oil field on August 17, 2019. The UN Panel inspected debris from the Shaybah attack and connected the extended-range UAV-X configuration to the Samad-3 display, while a later Science & Global Security performance study found that Samad-3's added fuel tank gave it enough range to reach strategic Saudi targets from Houthi-controlled territory.

Role in the conflict

In Yemen-war service, the Samad-3 was a Houthi-aligned long-range one-way attack UAV. Its reported role was to extend Houthi strike reach from Yemen toward high-value aviation, oil, and urban targets in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, rather than to provide reusable reconnaissance or tactical close support.

The distinction from Samad-2 matters for the conflict record. Science & Global Security modeled Samad-3 as a Samad-2 derivative with an external fuel tank and found median range estimates above 1,800 km, roughly 1,000 km more than Samad-2. The study concluded that Samad-3 could bring Riyadh and oil installations near the Persian Gulf within reach, while Samad-2 was unlikely to reach comparable strategic targets from Houthi-controlled territory.

Some individual strike claims remain contested. The July 2018 Abu Dhabi airport claim was denied by Emirati sources and questioned by Bellingcat before later Houthi video was assessed by Janes as seemingly confirming an attack. The September 2019 Abqaiq and Khurais claims should not be treated as Samad-3 use from Yemen: the UN Panel concluded that Houthi forces did not launch those attacks despite Houthi claims.
