Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Mistral missiles entered Ukraine's short-range air-defense inventory through allied transfers after Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion. Norway announced on 20 April 2022 that it had donated about 100 Mistral air-defense missiles and launchers to Ukraine and said the weapons had already been shipped.

Open imagery dated 30 May 2022 showed soldiers of Ukraine's 3rd Tank Brigade with donated Mistral and Stinger MANPADS. In May 2025, Ukraine's Ministry of Defence named Mistral alongside SAMP/T and Crotale NG as transferred air-defense systems that had shown high effectiveness during recent mass Russian air attacks.

Transfer and delivery timeline

The first clearly documented transfer came from Norwegian naval stocks in April 2022. Norway described the system as still modern and useful for Ukraine, while noting that it was being phased out from Norwegian minesweepers and corvettes.

Estonia added another Mistral supply channel in 2024. Its Ministry of Defence announced on 11 June 2024 that Estonia would provide Mistral-type short-range air-defense missile systems and missiles, without disclosing quantities for security reasons. At the September 2024 Ramstein meeting, Estonia's defence minister said the latest shipment of Mistral systems had reached Ukraine at the end of July.

Battlefield role

The documented role was point and very-short-range air defense for Ukrainian forces and defended areas. The sources support transfer, fielding, and Ukrainian use against Russian air attacks, but they do not identify specific shootdowns, missile expenditure, or exact unit distribution beyond the Ukrainian brigade image.

Mistral therefore appears in this conflict as a foreign-supplied air-defense and force-protection weapon rather than as a long-range strategic system. Its catalog role is tied to Ukrainian use and external military aid during the full-scale invasion phase of the broader 2014 Russia-Ukraine War.
