Direct proof of use
Merkava Mk 3 tanks are documented in Israeli use during the 2023 Israel-Hamas War through a combination of unit, imagery, and reserve-force reporting. The IDF Armored Corps page identifies the 188th Brigade as a brigade that mainly operates Merkava Mark III tanks, and IDF wartime releases placed the 188th Armored Brigade in Gaza-area preparation and later operations in Gaza City, Shuja'iyya, Gaza harbor, and southern Gaza.
Open-source reporting also directly identified Merkava Mk 3 tanks around Gaza during the war. The War Zone reported in January 2024 that Chinese state-media photos showed multiple Israeli Merkava Mk 3s operating around Gaza with added anti-drone screens and anti-magnetic-IED defensive fittings. The Times of Israel separately reported that the Phoenix Battalion, formed from retired reservists and rehabilitated decommissioned tanks after October 7, set up five tank companies and was involved in several operations inside Gaza.

Timeline
On October 21, 2023, before Israel's full-scale ground operations in Gaza, an IDF release quoted the commander of the 188th Armored Brigade saying brigade soldiers were already near the Gaza Strip. On November 16, 2023, the IDF said soldiers of the 188th Armored Brigade and Shayetet 13 had taken operational control of Gaza harbor.
By December 2023, IDF reporting placed the 188th Brigade in the Shuja'iyya area, where artillery units supported its advance and rescue efforts. In January 2024, The War Zone reported images of Merkava Mk 3 tanks around Gaza with additional protective screens and surface treatments. In February 2024, The Times of Israel reported that the Phoenix Battalion had used rehabilitated tanks in border areas and several Gaza operations before its temporary disbandment.

Narrative
The Mk 3's documented wartime role was armored maneuver and ground-force support rather than a new procurement or transfer. Public sources do not provide a complete order of battle for every Mk 3 tank in Gaza, but they show two overlapping paths of evidence: IDF releases naming 188th Brigade combat-team activity and independent reporting that identifies Mk 3 tanks around Gaza or rehabilitated reserve tanks used in the campaign.
The tank's visible wartime changes reflected threats faced by Israeli armor in Gaza. The War Zone described Merkava Mk 3s with turret and hull screens against drones and hull-side materials intended to reduce the risk from magnetic improvised explosive devices. IDF reporting on the 188th Brigade also described combat-team engagements in dense urban settings, including RPG and small-arms fire near Al-Quds Hospital and artillery support for the brigade's Shuja'iyya operation.
The evidence supports Israeli fielding and use of the Merkava Mk 3 in the Gaza war, but it does not establish a full count of tanks, every unit operating the type, or the specific tank variant used in each named engagement. Claims about individual tank losses or damage are therefore kept separate from the broader documented fielding record unless a source identifies the Mk 3 directly.
