Direct proof of use
The Leopard 2R HMBV is documented in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through Finnish transfer announcements and Ukrainian service reporting. Finland's Ministry of Defence announced on 23 February 2023 that it would hand over three Leopard 2 mine-clearing tanks to Ukraine, including training for their use and maintenance.
On 23 March 2023, Finland announced a second package with three more Leopard 2 armored mine-clearing vehicles and stated that the total number of such vehicles sent to Ukraine was now six. ArmyInform later reported that all six Leopard 2R vehicles had been supplied to Ukraine in 2023 and assigned to engineering units of one Ukrainian mechanized brigade.

Timeline
The public timeline starts with Finland's 13th Ukraine aid package on 23 February 2023, when the first three Leopard 2 mine-clearing tanks were announced with training support. A month later, Finland's 14th aid package added three more vehicles and made the public total six.
By 22 April 2025, ArmyInform described the full six-vehicle Leopard 2R set as having moved to Ukraine and been passed to Ukrainian engineering units. United24's English-language follow-up, citing ArmyInform, described the vehicles as integrated into the Ukrainian Armed Forces and used for clearing minefields, preparing fortifications, and supporting frontline mobility operations.

Role in Ukrainian service
The Leopard 2R HMBV entered Ukraine's equipment record as a specialized armored engineering vehicle rather than a gun tank. The Finnish announcements support transfer, training, and maintenance context; the Ukrainian sources support the later assignment of the vehicles to engineering units and their use in mine-clearing and mobility tasks.
Its documented role centers on under-armor route opening: pushing through mine obstacles with a Route-Opening Mine Plough, using a combat dozer blade for earthmoving and obstacle work, and marking lanes for following vehicles. The public sources do not identify a complete set of unit-level missions or locations for every vehicle, so the record is best read as confirmed Ukrainian fielding and engineering use, not a complete combat-loss or operational history.
