IRIS-T SLS is Diehl Defence's short-range ground-based member of the IRIS-T air-defense family, using the standard IRIS-T missile as a surface-to-air effector for a 12 km engagement layer. Diehl describes SLS as a mobile SHORAD system with launcher, sensor suite, and networked C2 that can operate alone or complement IRIS-T SLM; Germany has supplied SLS-related air-defense systems and missiles to Ukraine during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War.

Variants

Diehl presents SLS as the short-range member of the IRIS-T ground-based air-defense family, with SLM/SLX as longer-range family layers.

Diehl describes SLS as the short-range layer and the ideal complement to IRIS-T SLM; SLM uses a separate medium-range missile and fire-unit architecture.

Diehl describes SLX as an extended-range evolution intended to integrate into the wider IRIS-T ground-based air-defense family.

Fired Munition

The short-range SLS layer is built around the standard IRIS-T missile rather than a separate ground-only interceptor.

It is separate from the short-range SLS effector, which uses the unchanged IRIS-T air-to-air missile; the SL round gives SLM its longer 40-60 km engagement envelope and 20 km altitude layer against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, drones, and guided weapons. Germany has supplied IRIS-T SLM missiles and IRIS-T SLM/SLS air-defense equipment to Ukraine during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War.

The missile is integrated with fighters including Eurofighter/Typhoon, Gripen, F-16, Tornado, EF-18, KF-21, and F-5E; Reuters reporting also documents Saudi Eurofighters using IRIS-T against drones fired from Houthi-controlled Yemen. Saab's RBS 70 NG sight keeps the man-portable role while adding auto-tracking, thermal imaging, vehicle-integration, and networked or remote-control compatibility. Ukraine has fielded RBS 70 systems during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through Swedish and Australian support, including donated or procured launchers and training for Ukrainian personnel.

German-funded Skynex systems in Ukrainian service have been reported in truck-mounted power-plant defense roles, while Italy received the first NATO-member Skynex battery in December 2025.

Official UK and parliamentary statements place it in Ukraine's wartime air-defense network, with prototypes delivered and a follow-on batch intended to help protect cities, troops, infrastructure, and energy facilities from Russian aerial attacks.
