2014 Russia-Ukraine War

Forpost in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War

Russian forces have used Forpost-family UAVs in Ukraine for reconnaissance, targeting support, and later armed strike missions, with evidence ranging from 2014-era wreckage to March 2022 Forpost-R strike footage and later Ukrainian interception reports.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Forpost use in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is documented first through wreckage evidence. DFRLab identified five Russian Forpost UAVs lost in Ukraine from 2014 onward, using visible serial-number labels on photographed wreckage to connect the aircraft to Russian-assembled Forpost airframes.

The armed Forpost-R variant was documented after Russia's full-scale invasion. Janes reported that Russian Ministry of Defence footage released on March 13, 2022 showed an armed Forpost-R taking off for a mission over Ukraine before the video cut to the destruction of a Ukrainian multiple-launch rocket system.

Dated milestones

The early evidence places Forpost airframes in the Ukrainian theater during the first phase of the war, before the type's later armed use became visible in Russian official footage. CNA's 2023 study of Russian uncrewed systems lists Forpost among Russian-made UAVs used in Ukraine and describes the broad ISR and combat role of Russian UAVs in the war.

Later Ukrainian and Ukrainian-government-linked reporting continued to describe Forpost and Forpost-R aircraft as high-value Russian reconnaissance and strike UAVs. UNITED24 reported a 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade claim on September 22, 2025 that Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian Forpost UAV during a combat mission, and described the type as capable of carrying guided aerial munitions including KAB-20 bombs.

Operational role

In Ukraine, the Forpost family appears as a reusable Russian tactical UAV rather than an expendable one-way attack drone. The documented roles are reconnaissance and surveillance, target-acquisition support for other fires, and, for the Forpost-R, direct precision attack with guided munitions.

EDR Magazine reported from IDEX 2025 that the Forpost had been actively used in the Ukrainian theater since 2022 as a reconnaissance and strike UAV, and that a UZGA representative described strike-version carriage of guided missiles or gliding bombs. That reporting supports the role split visible in the Ukraine evidence: baseline Forpost airframes documented by losses, and Forpost-R/Forpost-RE configurations associated with armed carriage and strike missions.
