C-130 Hercules in the 2001 War in Afghanistan

U.S. C-130 and C-130J Hercules aircraft supported the Afghanistan war through combat airlift, airdrop, aeromedical evacuation, and sustainment missions from bases including Bagram Airfield.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

U.S. Air Force reporting directly documents C-130 Hercules aircraft flying combat airlift missions from Bagram Airfield during Operation Enduring Freedom. A June 2011 Air Force article stated that airmen at Bagram supported daily combat airlift missions in Afghanistan with C-130s assigned to the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron.

The same Afghanistan record includes specific airdrop use. In 2006, a C-130 from the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron dropped supplies to a U.S. Army unit in Afghanistan using the Joint Precision Airdrop System. In 2010, a C-130H crew deployed to Bagram conducted a low-cost, low-altitude combat airdrop to resupply soldiers at a forward operating base. In 2018, two U.S. C-130J Hercules aircraft airdropped more than 30 Container Delivery System bundles to a Resolute Support Expeditionary Advisory Package.

Airlift and sustainment role

The documented role was logistical rather than strike-focused: C-130s moved cargo, personnel, and supplies across the Afghan theater, with airdrop used when terrain, convoy risk, or limited infrastructure made ground delivery difficult. Air Force coverage from Bagram described the C-130's Afghanistan mission as combat airlift, airdrop support, and aeromedical missions.

Later C-130J coverage from Bagram described the aircraft and its support personnel providing tactical airlift, including aeromedical evacuation, cargo and personnel airlift, and airdrop for the train, advise, and assist mission in Afghanistan. DVIDS reporting on wet-wing missions also documented 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron C-130J crews qualified to defuel into approved fuel systems and airdrop fuel, with the aircraft able to deliver fuel to austere locations when ground convoy or fixed infrastructure options were limited.

Airdrop milestones

Several Afghanistan examples show the C-130 being used to adapt air mobility to counterinsurgency terrain. The 2006 JPADS mission used a GPS-guided cargo delivery system to deliver ammunition and water to troops on the ground. The 2010 LCLA mission used smaller low-altitude bundles to resupply soldiers at a forward operating base and was later described as a sustainment method for counterinsurgency operations throughout Afghanistan.

By 2018, U.S. C-130J units were still flying combat airdrop missions in the country. The May 2018 dual-formation drop linked crews from different C-130J units and delivered more than 30 CDS bundles to a Resolute Support advisory element supporting Afghan security forces.
