Defence Industry Europe reported on 12 November 2023 that the Israeli Air Force had begun operating its new Spark UAV in actions against Hamas in Gaza. The article identified Spark, also called Nitzotz, as a UAV under the IAF's 144th Squadron at Hatzor Air Force Base and described it as part of the Aeronautics Orbiter model family.
The same report placed Spark's Gaza role in intelligence gathering, ground-force support, and targeting. It said Israeli sources described the UAV as supporting efforts against Hamas tunnel infrastructure in northern Gaza, while noting that some specific mission details remained classified.

Fielding before Gaza operations
Public reporting shows the Spark/Nitzotz system entering Israeli Air Force service shortly before the war. The Times of Israel reported on 11 September 2023 that the IAF had received the Spark UAV, developed by Rafael and Aeronautics, for operation by the 144th Squadron.
Breaking Defense reported the next day that Spark was unveiled for the 144th UAV Squadron at Hatzor Air Force Base and that Israeli Air Force statements tied the aircraft to intelligence actions, escorting ground forces, directing strikes, and other missions. That fielding context separates receipt of the platform in September from the later November report of Gaza operations.

Operational role
