Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Official U.S. Air Force reporting documents AC-130 gunships in Afghanistan across several phases of the war. The AC-130U fact sheet says AC-130U gunships were employed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Resolute Support, and a Hurlburt Field profile of the 4th Special Operations Squadron says the AC-130U was used in Enduring Freedom, Freedom's Sentinel, Resolute Support, and Inherent Resolve after Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The most detailed public accounts describe close air support and danger-close fires. On November 2, 2016, an AC-130U crew known as Spooky 43 provided close air support to a U.S. Special Forces team and Afghan soldiers near Kunduz. On April 25, 2018, an AC-130U Spooky gunship supported Army Rangers and Afghan special forces during an ambush, firing 40 mm and 105 mm rounds near friendly positions. On April 3-4, 2019, AC-130U Spooky 41 fired in support of joint U.S. special operations and coalition forces near Nangarhar Province after an improvised explosive device attack and mass-casualty firefight.

AC-130W use is documented at the end of the war. Cannon Air Force Base reported that AC-130W Stinger II aircraft supported Enduring Freedom, Freedom's Sentinel, and Operation Allies Refuge, then shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan in summer 2021 to protect American and coalition forces during vetting and evacuation activity at Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Timeline

Publicly available official sources show the gunship role from initial Operation Enduring Freedom service through the final Kabul evacuation. AFSOC reporting on the 16th Special Operations Squadron says Spectre deployed on November 11, 2001 to an undisclosed location near Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

Later accounts provide incident-level detail. The November 2016 Kunduz mission, April 2018 ambush, and April 2019 Nangarhar mission each describe AC-130U crews providing close air support or precision fires for friendly ground forces in Afghanistan. The August 2021 Kabul account describes AC-130W nightly overwatch missions during the final U.S. withdrawal.

Operational role

The documented role was ground-force support rather than independent strategic bombing. Air Force accounts describe AC-130 crews supporting special operations and partner-force teams, suppressing enemy forces, protecting medical evacuation aircraft, helping recover casualties, and providing overwatch around Kabul airport during the withdrawal.

The public sources identify AC-130H, AC-130U, and AC-130W family use in Afghanistan rather than a single model throughout the war. They also separate documented use from broader deployment history: several sources prove that AC-130 gunships were fielded in Afghanistan, while the most specific firing accounts are attached to named AC-130U crews in 2016, 2018, and 2019.
