Direct proof of use
The documented Afghanistan use concerns BAE Systems' Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II, a laser-guidance conversion for Hydra 70 / 2.75-inch rockets. NAVAIR reported on April 17, 2012 that Marine units in Afghanistan had recently fielded APKWS II and that Headquarters Marine Corps declared initial operational capability on March 27, authorizing combat employment from AH-1W Super Cobra and UH-1Y Huey helicopters.
BAE Systems reported on January 15, 2013 that the U.S. Navy was buying additional APKWS rockets after combat use in theater. The company said more than 100 APKWS rockets had been fired in action in Afghanistan since Marines first deployed the weapon in March 2012.

Operational role
In Afghanistan, APKWS II gave Marine helicopter crews a precision fire-support option between unguided rockets and larger laser-guided weapons. NAVAIR described the WGU-59/B APKWS II as a semi-active laser guidance section that integrates with current 2.75-inch rocket motors and warheads and provides precision engagement of soft or lightly armored targets.
The specific public sources identify Marine Corps AH-1W and UH-1Y helicopters as the authorized Afghanistan combat platforms. They do not name individual incidents, locations inside Afghanistan, or target sets beyond the system's stated role against soft and lightly armored targets.
