Direct proof of use
The Samad-2 appears in the 2014 Yemen Civil War evidence record through the UAV-X aircraft inspected and reported by the UN Panel of Experts on Yemen. The Panel reported that Houthi forces began deploying a new UAV type, called UAV-X in the report, from August 2018 and that the aircraft had been operated in both reconnaissance and attack roles.
The Panel described the attack configuration as a loitering munition carrying an 18 kg explosive warhead mixed with ball bearings, and the reconnaissance configuration as using a Nikon D810 camera. Its 2020 report then linked the UAV-X designation to the Samad family and stated that Samad-1 allegedly referred to a reconnaissance version of the weaponized Samad-2/UAV-X.

Timeline
The UN Panel reported the deployment of UAV-X from August 2018, after Houthi UAV activity had already included shorter-range systems such as Qasef and Rased. The Panel inspected UAV-X debris in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates during 2018, documenting the airframe's V-tail pusher layout, engines, camera fit, warhead option, and estimated fuel capacity.
In 2019, Houthi-affiliated media publicly displayed the Samad family, and subsequent reporting treated UAV-X as the Samad-2/Samad-3 family. The 2020 UN report distinguished an extended-range version with an additional fuel tank from the original UAV-X, while a Science & Global Security flight-performance study treated Samad-3 as a Samad-2 derivative with extra fuel and modeled Samad-2 as substantially shorter-ranged.

Role in the conflict
In the Yemen war, the Samad-2/UAV-X role was long-range reconnaissance and one-way attack for Houthi-aligned forces. UN reporting places the type in the broader Houthi missile-and-UAV campaign against targets in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, while CSIS describes the Samad family as part of the Houthi drone inventory that emerged after the death of Saleh al-Sammad in 2018.
The most cautious reading separates Samad-2 from later Samad-3 strike claims. Science & Global Security found that Samad-2 and Samad-3 were both referred to as UAV-X in some reporting, but modeled Samad-2 as unable to reach the 2019 Khurays, Abqaiq, and Shaybah oil installations from Houthi-controlled territory; it found that the external-tank Samad-3 could reach those strategic targets. For Samad-2 specifically, the strongest evidence is therefore UN-documented UAV-X fielding in reconnaissance and loitering-munition roles, not attribution of every Samad-family long-range strike to Samad-2.

Supply and manufacture context
The UN Panel assessed that Qasef and Samad-family weaponized UAVs were manufactured inside Houthi-held territory using local materials and imported high-value components. Its 2020 report traced 3W engines documented among early-model Samad UAV debris in 2018 through a commercial chain outside Yemen before the engines reached an Iranian logistics company.
That evidence supports Houthi-aligned fielding and supply context without proving a complete local design chain. The same Panel reporting noted that the quality of some newer UAV manufacturing differed from the more home-made appearance of Qasef-2K and Samad aircraft, so the Samad-2 page should be read as documenting use and assembly/supply context rather than a settled origin claim.
