Direct proof of use
The Merkava Mk 4 is documented in the 2023 Israel-Hamas War through IDF-released imagery and contemporary reporting on Israeli armored operations. A Wikimedia Commons file sourced to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit identifies an IDF Merkava Mk 4 Barak tank in the Swords of Iron War, while Army Recognition reported on October 15, 2023 that Israel deployed Merkava IV tanks in land operations against Hamas and the Gaza Strip.
Israel's Ministry of Defense later linked Merkava tanks to successful ground operations in the Swords of Iron War, stating in August 2025 that Merkava tanks, Namer APCs, and Eitan APCs had accumulated more than one million kilometers in current operations since the war began.

Timeline
On October 13, 2023, El Pais published imagery of IDF Merkava tanks maneuvering near the Gaza border and described Merkava IV tanks as central armored vehicles for a possible ground offensive into Gaza. Two days later, Army Recognition reported Merkava IV deployment in the framework of land operations against Hamas and the Gaza Strip.
On March 28, 2024, Wikimedia Commons recorded an IDF Spokesperson's Unit image identifying a Merkava Mk 4 Barak tank in the Swords of Iron War. In August 2025, Israel's Ministry of Defense cited Swords of Iron War combat success as the reason for accelerating production of Merkava Mk 4 Barak tanks and related armored vehicles.

Narrative
The documented Israeli role for the Merkava Mk 4 in this conflict was ground maneuver and armored support during the campaign against Hamas in and around Gaza. Reporting before and during the ground phase described Merkava IV tanks as a major component of the Israeli ground package, while AP reporting on October 30, 2023 described Israeli forces advancing deeper into Gaza with tanks and other armored vehicles.
The Mk 4 Barak evidence is narrower but direct: the IDF-sourced Commons image identifies the Barak configuration during the Swords of Iron War, and the Ministry of Defense's later production-expansion statement specifically names Merkava Mk 4 Barak tanks among the armored vehicles being accelerated after wartime operational use. These sources support fielding and operational use by Israel, but they do not by themselves verify individual battlefield loss claims or the specific target effects of particular tank engagements.
