Direct proof of use
Croatia's Ministry of Defence confirmed that Croatia transferred M-84 tanks, M-80 infantry fighting vehicles, spare parts, and ammunition to Ukraine as part of a German-backed arrangement connected to Croatia's Leopard 2A8 procurement. The ministry's later Leopard 2A8 contract notice stated that the transferred equipment went to Ukraine at the end of 2024 and had a total value of EUR 144.8 million.
The first public battlefield identification of the Ukrainian-operated tanks came in September 2025. Defense Express reported that tank crews from Ukraine's 141st Separate Mechanized Brigade were fighting in Croatian-delivered M-84 tanks and identified the vehicles as the modernized M-84A4 Snajper variant. United24 and MilitaryLand separately summarized the same public footage and reporting as showing Croatian-supplied M-84A4 Snajper tanks in combat service with the 141st Mechanized Brigade.

Timeline
On 14 November 2024, Croatia announced the transfer of M-84 tanks and M-80 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine while explaining that German funding for the transferred assets would support Croatia's acquisition of Leopard 2A8 tanks. On 10 December 2025, the Croatian Ministry of Defence described the Ukraine transfer as having taken place at the end of 2024 and again tied it to the German-funded replacement arrangement.
On 12 September 2025, Defense Express reported the first public appearance in Ukraine of Croatian-delivered M-84 tanks with crews from the 141st Separate Mechanized Brigade. The article identified the variant as M-84A4 Snajper and noted visible theater modifications, including anti-drone protection, electronic-warfare equipment, and added explosive-reactive armor.

Battlefield role
In Ukrainian service, the M-84A4 Snajper appears as a main battle tank assigned to mechanized ground combat rather than as a separate fire-support or training-only system. The public evidence links it to the Ukrainian side and to the 141st Mechanized Brigade, but does not establish a full unit inventory, all deployment locations, or a precise first combat date.
The reported configuration reflects both the Croatian M-84A4/Snajper upgrade and Ukrainian theater adaptation. Defense Express identified M-84A4 features such as an improved fire-control system, laser warning equipment, and a meteorological sensor, while also noting added drone cages, electronic-warfare gear, and explosive-reactive armor on the vehicles seen in Ukraine.
