Direct proof of use
The Leopard 2 is documented in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through official transfer records and battlefield-use reporting. Germany's federal delivery list records 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks, ammunition, spare parts, and training support supplied to Ukraine, while the Swedish Armed Forces reported in September 2023 that ten Stridsvagn 122 tanks, the Swedish Leopard 2 version, were on the battlefield in Ukraine with Ukrainian crews.
Ukrainian ArmyInform later published a March 2024 account of a Leopard crew that trained in Sweden, operated Leopard tanks from late summer 2023, fought around Robotyne, and was then serving on the Lyman axis. Ukrinform reported in January 2025 that a Ukrainian Leopard tank crew of the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade destroyed or disabled Russian armored vehicles during a Russian assault in the Pokrovsk sector.

Timeline
Germany announced the initial Leopard 2A6 transfer decision on 25 January 2023, opening the way for other Leopard 2 operators to participate. The Netherlands and Denmark announced in April 2023 that they would acquire, refurbish, and donate 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks for Ukraine, and Rheinmetall later described the corresponding 2024 delivery contract.
By September 2023, Sweden publicly described its Strv 122 contribution as already present in Ukraine and manned by Ukrainian crews. ArmyInform's March 2024 report placed a Ukrainian Leopard crew in combat around Robotyne and later in defensive work on the Lyman axis; a January 2025 Ukrinform report added a separate Leopard engagement in the Pokrovsk sector.

Narrative
Leopard 2 use in Ukraine followed a transfer and training path rather than pre-2022 Ukrainian possession. Germany's January 2023 decision covered Leopard 2A6 tanks from Bundeswehr stocks, training, logistics, ammunition, and maintenance support; its later delivery list records 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks delivered as the German share of a joint project with other Leopard 2 user states.
The Ukrainian fleet also included related Leopard 2-family variants from other donors. Sweden reported that ten Strv 122 tanks were donated, that Ukrainian crews were trained in Sweden, and that the tanks were on the battlefield in Ukraine. The Netherlands-Denmark Leopard 2A4 effort added a separate refurbished-tank track, with Rheinmetall contracted to supply 14 upgraded Leopard 2A4 tanks for Ukraine.
Documented employment includes direct-fire support, anti-armor fighting, and defensive action. ArmyInform's crew account describes a Leopard column action near Robotyne in which Leopard crews responded to Russian fire and later defensive use on the Lyman axis. Ukrinform's Pokrovsk-sector report describes a Ukrainian Leopard tank crew firing during a Russian armored assault and destroying or disabling multiple vehicles.
