Direct proof of use
The A-50's use in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is documented through Russian theater reporting, Ukrainian official claims, and later allied-source reporting on shootdowns. Breaking Defense reported in December 2023 that Russian A-50U aircraft were being used closer to the fight to detect and track Ukrainian aircraft, steer Russian aviation, identify defended areas, and support a wider S-400 air-defense picture.
Ukraine's Defence Intelligence reported on 23 February 2024 that a joint operation with the Ukrainian Air Force downed a Russian A-50U over the Sea of Azov. The agency described the aircraft as a Russian airborne command post used for long-range radar detection, control, and guidance for missile attacks on Ukraine by strategic aviation.

Timeline
The clearest dated public record begins in late 2023, when reporting based on UK defence intelligence and Russian air-defense commentary described Russia moving A-50U aircraft into a more exposed support role around Ukraine. Forces News, quoting the UK Ministry of Defence, later said Russia only began operating A-50 aircraft over the Sea of Azov in November 2023.
On 14 January 2024, Ukraine's commander-in-chief said Ukrainian forces shot down a Beriev A-50 and an Il-22, with an attached tracker showing targets disappearing above the Sea of Azov, according to AP. In June 2024, The War Zone reported that a U.S. Army air-defense officer attributed the January A-50 shootdown to a Ukrainian Patriot engagement.
On 23 February 2024, DIU and the Ukrainian Air Force reported the downing of another A-50U over the Sea of Azov. Forces News reported UK defence intelligence's assessment that the aircraft was destroyed south of the Sea of Azov and that it was the second A-50 destroyed in two months.

Battlefield role
In Russian service, the A-50U appears in the conflict as a scarce airborne sensor and battle-management aircraft rather than a strike platform. Its relevance came from extending radar coverage, coordinating air operations, and supporting other Russian systems with a recognized air picture over and around the theater.
The public sources describe several connected roles: long-range detection of aircraft, airborne control, support to missile attacks by strategic aviation, and cueing or data-sharing for air-defense coverage. Those claims support the catalog role package of reconnaissance and surveillance, targeting support, and air defense for Russia's side of the conflict.
The 2024 losses changed the aircraft from a background enabler into a visible high-value target. Forces News quoted UK defence intelligence as saying the January shootdown forced Russian decision-makers to consider safer operating areas and that the loss of two specialist crews would likely strain the remaining force if constant operations continued.
