Martin Marietta

Martin Marietta was a U.S. aerospace, defense, space, electronics, and materials company formed in 1961 and absorbed into Lockheed Martin after the 1995 Lockheed-Martin Marietta merger. Its defense work included Cold War precision munitions and missile programs, including production of the AGM-62 Walleye television-guided glide bomb and development of the M712 Copperhead laser-guided 155 mm artillery projectile.

Martin Marietta linked the Glenn L. Martin aircraft and missile lineage with American-Marietta's industrial materials business, then grew into a major U.S. defense and aerospace contractor. By the early 1990s its public identity covered missiles, electronics, space launch systems, information systems, and materials operations, with Bethesda, Maryland serving as corporate headquarters.

The company ceased operating as a separate defense contractor after the March 1995 combination with Lockheed Corporation. Lockheed Martin carried forward the defense and aerospace businesses, while Martin Marietta Materials later became a separate public building-materials company. Period sources may therefore identify older systems under the Martin Marietta name even when later corporate history is held by successor organizations.
