Direct proof of use
Samad-1 appears in the 2014 Yemen Civil War record as the reconnaissance designation within the Houthi-operated Samad UAV family. The UN Panel of Experts on Yemen reported that UAV-X was first used by Houthi forces against targets in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in 2018, later referred to the UAV-X as the Samad UAV after Houthi-affiliated media displayed Samad-3, and noted that Samad-1 allegedly referred to a reconnaissance version of the weaponized Samad-2/UAV-X.
The same UN report connected the family to the Houthi war effort inside Yemen: it assessed that Qasef and Samad-family UAVs were manufactured inside Houthi-held territory using local materials and foreign-sourced high-value components. A peer-reviewed Science & Global Security analysis separately describes the Samad aircraft family as operated by Ansar Allah, identifies Samad-1 as the surveillance and reconnaissance member, and estimates its range from public imagery and scaling assumptions.

Timeline
The UN Panel reported that, beginning in August 2018, it began noting Houthi deployment of extended-range unmanned aerial vehicles capable of reaching targets deep in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Its 2019 report said UAV-X examples inspected by the Panel had been operated in both reconnaissance and attack roles, with a Nikon D810 camera documented in the reconnaissance configuration.
By July 2019, Houthi-affiliated media had displayed the Samad family publicly in Sana'a, and CSIS Missile Threat reported that the July display included Samad-1, Samad-2, and Samad-3 UAVs. The 2020 UN report then used the Houthi Samad designation for UAV-X and described Samad-1 as the reconnaissance version of the family.

Role in the conflict
Within the Yemen conflict, the source-backed role for Samad-1 is reconnaissance and surveillance for Houthi-aligned forces, not a named strike incident. The evidence separates the reconnaissance designation from the larger weaponized Samad-2/UAV-X and extended-range Samad-3 variants, which are associated in UN reporting with attacks beyond Yemen's borders.
The manufacturing and supply evidence is family-level rather than a dated Samad-1 recovery. The UN Panel assessed that Samad-family UAVs were made inside Houthi-held territory from local materials plus imported components, and it traced 3W-110i B2 engines found in early-model Samad UAV debris in 2018 through a chain that passed from Germany through Greece and Turkey to an Iranian logistics company. Those findings support Houthi-aligned fielding and supply context while leaving individual Samad-1 mission dates less precisely documented.
