Direct proof of use
Iron Dome is directly documented in the 2023 Israel-Hamas War through Israeli military reporting and dated imagery from southern Israel. An IDF daily recap for October 15, 2023 said Hamas rocket fire toward civilian towns and cities was continuing, that more than 6,000 rockets had been fired at Israel, and that active missile-defense systems including Iron Dome continued to intercept many of those rockets.
Reuters imagery separately documented Iron Dome interceptions over southern Israel during the opening days of the war. A Reuters Connect image record from Ashkelon says Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted rockets launched from the Gaza Strip on October 9, 2023, and related Reuters records show similar Iron Dome interceptions from Ashkelon on October 7 and October 21.

Timeline
The war began on October 7, 2023 with Hamas-led attacks from Gaza and large-scale rocket fire toward Israel. AP reporting later summarized the first day as involving at least 2,000 Hamas rockets, while Reuters imagery from that same day showed Iron Dome intercepting rockets launched from the Gaza Strip as seen from Ashkelon.
By October 15, the IDF said rocket fire continued against Tel Aviv, Herzliya, and southern communities, and named Iron Dome among the active missile-defense systems intercepting many of the rockets. On October 26, the U.S. Defense Department said the United States was sending two U.S. Iron Dome systems to Israel to bolster air-defense capabilities and protect citizens from rocket attacks; that transfer support is separate from the already documented Israeli battlefield use.

Operational role
In this conflict, Iron Dome's documented role was defensive counter-rocket and force-protection work inside Israel's layered air-defense architecture. The source-backed use case is interception of short-range rockets fired from the Gaza Strip toward populated areas and other Israeli communities, not offensive strike activity.
Associated Press reporting in late October 2023 described the war with Hamas as a severe test for Iron Dome and said most rockets had been intercepted, while noting that some rockets penetrated and hit as far away as Tel Aviv. A CSIS discussion with an Israeli Missile Defense Organization official also described October 7 as a day when David's Sling and Iron Dome were the main working systems in Israel's air and missile-defense architecture.
Public sources do not provide a complete battery-by-battery firing log for Iron Dome during the war. This record therefore limits its claim to documented Israeli use of Iron Dome for rocket interception during the 2023 Israel-Hamas War, plus the separately sourced U.S. transfer of two Iron Dome systems to Israel after the war began.
