Direct proof of use
On July 23, 2018, special mission aviators from the 16th Expeditionary Special Operations Squadron were photographed loading 30 mm ammunition aboard an AC-130W Stinger II at an undisclosed Southwest Asia location in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The DVIDS caption identifies the aircraft as carrying a side-firing trainable 30 mm gun with tracer-less ammunition and an associated munitions-storage system, and frames the mission as coalition air support for partnered forces fighting ISIS.
The ammunition is cataloged here as part of the 30x173 mm Bushmaster family because Northrop Grumman identifies the GAU-23 as the aircraft version of the Mk44 and describes the 30x173 mm line as the advanced ammunition fired by Bushmaster-family guns. The evidence supports deployed coalition use of the ammunition family through the AC-130W; it does not identify the exact cartridge model loaded in the DVIDS image.

Timeline
The documented theater milestone for this record is the July 2018 loading event, which places 30 mm ammunition aboard an AC-130W during the coalition campaign. Official Air Force background describes AC-130W primary missions as close air support and air interdiction and lists 30 mm and 105 mm cannons among the Precision Strike Package armament.
A later 27th Special Operations Wing history note states that AC-130W Stinger II aircraft supported Operation Inherent Resolve and worked with conventional and special operations forces in the campaign that drove ISIS out of Iraq and Syria. That history gives platform-level campaign context, while the DVIDS image gives the direct ammunition-level evidence used for this page.

Narrative
Within Operation Inherent Resolve, the 30x173 mm ammunition suite appears through the AC-130W gunship rather than as an independently deployed ground or naval ammunition stock. The AC-130W's role was to provide persistent direct fires, close air support, urban-operation support, and air interdiction for coalition and partner forces.
Northrop Grumman's product material describes the 30x173 mm suite as a family of tactical and target-practice ammunition fired from land-, air-, and sea-based platforms. Its listed round types include high-explosive incendiary, practice, programmable airburst, high-explosive incendiary tracer, target-practice tracer, and armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot loadings. The Operation Inherent Resolve record should therefore be read as documented use of the 30 mm Bushmaster-family ammunition aboard AC-130W gunships, not proof that every 30x173 mm variant in the family was used in the campaign.
