On July 23, 2018, special mission aviators from the 16th Expeditionary Special Operations Squadron were photographed loading 30 mm ammunition aboard an AC-130W Stinger II at an undisclosed Southwest Asia location in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The DVIDS caption identifies the aircraft as carrying a side-firing trainable 30 mm gun with tracer-less ammunition and an associated munitions-storage system, and frames the mission as coalition air support for partnered forces fighting ISIS.
The ammunition is cataloged here as part of the 30x173 mm Bushmaster family because Northrop Grumman identifies the GAU-23 as the aircraft version of the Mk44 and describes the 30x173 mm line as the advanced ammunition fired by Bushmaster-family guns. The evidence supports deployed coalition use of the ammunition family through the AC-130W; it does not identify the exact cartridge model loaded in the DVIDS image.
