Soviet ammunition industry

Those enterprises formed metal bodies, produced explosive and propellant inputs, assembled fuzes and charges, loaded rounds, and packed finished ammunition for storage and issue.

The People's Commissariat of Ammunition, created when the Soviet defense-industry commissariat was divided in January 1939, became the principal wartime authority for ammunition and explosives production. During the German invasion in 1941, many plants were evacuated eastward and output fell below front requirements; by 1942 the sector had been rebuilt across a much larger mobilized production base.
