NII-400 (Gidropribor)

NII-400 (Gidropribor) is the Soviet and Russian naval-underwater-weapons research and production organization behind a long line of torpedoes, mines, anti-mine systems, hydroacoustic countermeasures, and underwater vehicles. Established in wartime Leningrad as NII-400 for mine, torpedo, and sweeping research, it was renamed Gidropribor in 1966, later became the Gidropribor central research institute and NPO Uran lead organization, and now operates as JSC Concern Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor in Saint Petersburg.

The organization traces its direct wartime form to February 1944, when Soviet shipbuilding authorities organized the Scientific Research Mine-Torpedo-Sweeping Institute No. 400 in Leningrad on former Plant No. 231 and TsKB-36 boat-base infrastructure. Its early tasking centered on new and modernized torpedoes, naval mines, and minesweeping weapons, while a 1948 Lomonosov branch specialized in thermal-engine torpedoes.

Gidropribor became a broader naval-underwater-weapons center during the Cold War, with test facilities, experimental production, and branches tied to Soviet torpedo and mine development. Public company histories credit NII-400/Gidropribor and its successor structure with about 180 underwater-weapon and special-equipment patterns delivered to fleet service, including torpedo and mine families, anti-mine equipment, hydroacoustic countermeasures, and autonomous underwater systems.

The modern concern remains a Russian state scientific center and part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation structure. Its own public material describes a full cycle from research and applied development through prototypes, tests, serial-production support, and production of naval underwater weapons for Russian and foreign naval customers.
