MDL traces its dockyard history to a small dry dock at Mazagon in 1774 and its modern corporate form to incorporation as a private limited company in 1934. After Government of India takeover in 1960, the yard expanded from ship repair into multi-unit naval construction, submarine work, commercial vessels, offshore platforms, and heavy engineering.
The company's public portfolio is centered on naval ships and submarines but also includes littoral combat ships, auxiliary vessels, tugs, barges, dredgers, ferries, cargo vessels, and special products. MDL says it has built 806 vessels since 1960, including 31 warships and 8 submarines, with facilities at Mumbai and Nhava supporting modular construction and submarine assembly.

Official and government sources use MDL as a common abbreviation for Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. Older material may use Mazagon Dock Limited for the same Mumbai shipyard lineage.
