CSL was incorporated in 1972 as a fully owned Government of India company and developed the first phase of its Kochi shipyard facilities by 1982. Company material describes the yard as able to build ships up to 110,000 DWT and repair ships up to 125,000 DWT, with shipbuilding, ship repair, and specialized marine engineering as its principal business.
For naval systems, CSL is significant because it has combined hull construction, detailed engineering, and system integration on complex Indian Navy programs. The yard delivered IAC-1 Vikrant to the Indian Navy in 2022, has built the Mahe-class ASW shallow-water craft line under a Ministry of Defence contract, and has reported a six-ship Next Generation Missile Vessel order for the Indian Navy.

CSL is a listed Government company under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, not a private defense prime. Public naval-program detail is strongest for delivered or officially announced Indian Navy projects.
