Baykar's engine plan

Baykar plans to spend $300 million over five years to develop its own jet-engine capability, according to Reuters' report from Istanbul.

Chief executive Haluk Bayraktar told Reuters that the company wants greater supply-chain resilience by bringing more of the propulsion work in house.

Akıncı first, then Kızılelma

Bayraktar said the first target is a turboprop engine for the Bayraktar Akıncı, followed by a turbofan engine for Baykar's Kızılelma unmanned fighter program.

The Reuters report said both aircraft were using Ukrainian-built engines at the time, and Baykar had also signed a separate agreement with Ukraine's Ivchenko-Progress to co-develop a turbofan engine.

Why it matters

The plan shows Baykar trying to move from platform export toward deeper vertical integration in aerospace manufacturing.

That shift matters because engines are among the most sensitive and technically difficult components in unmanned combat aircraft, and Baykar's move aims to reduce exposure to supplier restrictions and wartime disruption.
