The Pinnow site developed from an NVA rocket-technology training and repair complex into one of Brandenburg's largest East German military-industrial workplaces. Local histories describe construction of a repair facility for special armament from 1962, the 1965 renaming to Instandsetzungswerk Pinnow, and a heavily controlled plant layout divided into security zones for different technical work areas. By the late 1960s the plant employed roughly 1,600 people and was important enough to receive dedicated housing and rail access for the workforce.
IWP's work sat at the maintenance-production boundary rather than resembling a single-product private company. Sources describe repair and maintenance of missiles and their control equipment, overhaul of radar, radio, measuring, and telecommunications systems, and licensed production of anti-tank missiles in the 1980s. A FASTA-4 launcher technical reference states that development and production of the four-round low-altitude air-defense launcher took place at IWP Pinnow in the German Democratic Republic.
Defense production stopped with the dissolution and conversion of East German military industry in 1990. Spektrum reported that East German plants that developed, produced, or maintained military equipment were ordered to stop work on 1 August 1990, and that Buck Werke took over the 270-hectare Pinnow industrial site on 31 July 1991 as Buck Inpar. The post-IWP site became associated with demilitarization, munitions disposal, and a local telephone and rocket museum preserving examples of former NVA missile technology.
