GDELS-Steyr continues an Austrian armored-vehicle lineage that passed through Austro-Daimler, Puch, Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and the Vienna-Simmering armored-vehicle site. GDELS heritage material traces the Simmering armored-vehicle role through the 1959 acquisition of Osterreichische Saurer-Werke, its full integration into Steyr-Daimler-Puch by 1970, and the later formation of Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug.
The current production connection centers on the Pandur 6x6 and 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle family. The Austrian Pandur EVO order signed in February 2024 covers 225 additional vehicles, new mission variants, and continuing work at the Vienna-Simmering production site with a large Austrian supplier base.
The same Austrian armored-vehicle lineage also produced tracked protected-mobility systems. The Steyr 4K 7FA armored personnel carrier followed the Saurer 4K 4FA family and remained visible in later foreign service after Austrian production ended.

Current GDELS-Steyr naming covers a manufacturer lineage that includes Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug and later General Dynamics European Land Systems ownership. Older Pandur-family and tracked-vehicle sources may use legacy Steyr-Daimler-Puch, Saurer-Steyr, or SSF naming.
